Power Rangers (film)

Power Rangers (billed as Saban's Power Rangers) is an upcoming 2017 American superhero film directed by Dean Israelite and written by John GatinsKieran Mulroney, Michele Mulroney, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film is based on the franchise of the same name, it stars Dacre MontgomeryNaomi ScottRJ CylerBecky GLudi LinBill HaderBryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks.
The third film based on the Power Rangers property, it serves as a reboot and re-imagining of the franchise. It also marks the first Power Ranger film in the 21st Century. The film features most of the main characters of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers portrayed by a new cast. Franchise creator Haim Saban returned to produce the film under his private equity investment firm. The movie will be released in the United States on March 24, 2017.

Premise

A trans-dimensional energy field called The Morphing Grid is channeled through a single object, called The Zeo Crystal, causing it to have immense power and control over life. The intergalactic being Rita Repulsa attempts to steal the crystal in order to control it, however it is guarded by a powerful energy field which vaporizes all who touch it. She creates a fearsome creature with a sole purpose to destroy the field and retrieve the crystal. However, a warrior, known as Zordon, leads a group called the Power Rangers to stop it. They succeed in destroying the creature, shattering its essence around the planet, Rita is sent through a black hole to the far ends of existence, and Zordon himself morphs into pure energy.
65 million years later, five teenage student outcasts with attitude accidentally discover the Power Coins, the source of the original Rangers' power, inadvertently drawing Rita back to Earth where the Zeo Crystal remains. Under the tutelage of former Red Ranger Zordon, these teenagers become new Power Rangers, however they must learn to master their new skills as well as how to work as a team before Rita can retrieve the Crystal by resurrecting the creature – Goldar.

Production


Actors began testing for the roles of the five Power Rangers on October 2, 2015. On October 7, 2015, Naomi Scott was cast as Kimberly. Newcomers Dacre MontgomeryLudi Lin and RJ Cyler were then cast as Jason, Zack, and Billy respectively. At the months' end, Becky G was chosen to play Trini. On October 30, 2015, Saban confirmed that the Rangers would have the same first names as those on the original series. When it came to casting the Rangers, director Dean Israelite said, "From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process", and that while the races of the characters were switched around, he added that, "we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.” On February 2, 2016, it was announced that Elizabeth Banks would portray Rita Repulsa in the film. Four months later, Bryan Cranston, who voiced Twin Man and Snizard in the original series, announced he was cast as Zordon. Cranston revealed that he will do motion-capture and CGI. In September 2016, Walter Emanuel Jones, the actor who played Zack in the original series, confirmed none of the original cast would cameo in the film. Towards the end of the month, comedian Bill Hader was cast as Alpha 5. During a panel at New York Comic Con, it was confirmed that Goldar would appear in the film
